Started in the faith community, CHAC was established in response to the 4500 uninsured residents in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Several of these people fall into a “healthcare access gap” meaning they do not have access to an employee sponsored health plan, yet do not quality for state funded programs.
Without health insurance people typically forego or postpone preventive and routine healthcare until there is an emergency, which is more costly and less effective. CHAC helps connect these individuals with access to primary healthcare, certain specialty care, the top ten lab tests, radiology and pharmaceuticals.
